In Loving Memory...

News from St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, San Marcos, TX                                              In the Diocese of West Texas

By: Carolyn Dobbs, Center Leader

At our January Circle of Care meeting, we honored our sister Sheila Fling, a former member of our center. Sheila passed away December 29, 2025 in Wimberley, TX at the age of 90. Sheila grew up in a very religious family; her father was a Baptist minister and her mother traveled internationally for the Women's Missionary Union. Sheila's own approach to religion broadened and became eclectic with her exposure to different religions and ideas.

Sheila Fling (1935 - 2025)

Sheila earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at UT-Austin, and taught Psychology at Texas State University for over 25 years. As a Distinguished Professor Emerita, she established the Sheila Fling Endowed Scholarship at Texas State. Coming from a family of music lovers, Sheila also established the Fling Family Scholarship in Music at Texas State.

Sheila lived in Japan while on leave from Texas State, learned the Japanese language and took tea lessons. Sheila taught the Japanese tea ceremony to many students in the U.S. and gave presentations internationally as she traveled.

Sharing our favorite memories of Sheila revealed that some center members had been her college students and known her for decades. Others knew Sheila through her community involvement and generosity to others. All of us learned from her legacy of teaching and service.

Remembering Sheila L-R: Rev. Rachel Joiner, Carolyn Dobbs, Ken Nesbit, Nick Hoover, Charlotte Sontag, Sandy Baggett. Center members not pictured: Lin Boudreaux, Michael Casey, Donnelle Gooch, Mary Hamilton, Linda Nichols, Lee Williams.
